Inspect the Edges
If you're worried about the condition of your window film, take a close look at the edges. Age and exposure to the sun can cause damage to the edges of the film. If this is happening, you'll notice cracking and peeling along the edges. You might also notice changes to the adhesion. For instance, the edges may be lifting up due to a lack of adhesion. Or, you may notice that the edges appear to be baked onto the surface of the window. This is caused by the crystallization of the adhesive used during the installation of your window film. If you see any problems with the edges of your window film, it's time for a replacement.
Test the Temperature
If you installed your window film to help to keep your home more energy-efficient, test the temperature. Depending on the age of your window film, it might not be doing the job anymore. As window film ages, many of its energy-saving properties are lost. When that happens, you'll start feeling energy loss through the glass again. If you're concerned about that problem, put your hand on the glass. If you can feel the outside temperature radiating through the glass, it's time for a new window film.
Check for Color Change
If your window film is more than a few years old, start paying attention to the color. Window film may change color as it ages. If it does, it might not look as good as it did when it was brand-new. It might also be more difficult to see through the film, which can interfere with the view from your windows. If you chose a clear film, you might notice some yellowing over the years.
